Student's Mother Sues FedEx After Fatal Accident Involving a Bus

On April 11, a charter bus traveling north on Interstate 5 in Northern California was hit head-on by a FedEx truck. The FedEx truck was heading south on the I-5 when it veered over the extensive median and collided with the bus. The accident resulted in 10 fatalities, 5 of which were students.

The charter bus was filled with dozens of young students headed to Humboldt State University for the weekend to preview the school as a prospective college. The mother of one of these students is now suing FedEx for more than $100 million in damages.

The negligence suit was filed on behalf of Rosa Rivera, the mother of student Jennifer Bonilla who was killed in the crash. The suit alleges that FedEx trucks have a history of catching fire. The suit names the FedEx truck driver as a defendant, as well as the bus owner, claiming that the bus did not have adequate exits. As a result, the occupants had difficulty exiting the burning bus after the accident.
