Devastating Trucking Accident on Interstate 5 in Gorman, California

On August 27, 2013 at around 6:00 a.m., a fatal trucking accident occurred on Interstate 5 in Gorman, California. The collision occurred in the southbound direction in the vicinity of Smokey Bear Road. The tragic accident arose after a big-rig truck struck another big-rig that was parked on the right shoulder of the highway. Investigators say that it appeared as though a 2005 Volvo big-rig truck was stopped when a 2003 Freightliner truck collided with it.

After the collision, the Freightliner truck became engulfed in flames which spread to the other truck. The driver of the Freightliner managed to get out of the flaming cab and attempted to crawl under the Volvo trailer for safety. The rear portion of the trailer collapsed on the driver, pinning him under the flaming vehicle. Authorities say that the man died of his injuries at the scene of the accident. The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office has not released the identity of the truck driver. The driver of the Volvo has been identified as Jose Gomez of Hesperia. Mr. Gomez was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital for treatment of his serious injuries.

Tragically, freeway truck accidents such as this one commonly result in fatal and severe injuries. Drivers travel at high speeds on freeways which make any collisions devastating. The high number of trucks on California's freeways also adds to the potential danger.
