Semi-Truck Strikes Bakersfield Pedestrian in Crosswalk

60-year-old Neva Yribarren was pronounced dead on Friday, April 26th, after sustaining fatal injuries when she was hit by a semi-truck while crossing the street in Oildale, California. Several reports state that the Tehachapi native was legally crossing the street, in the crosswalk at the intersection of Merle Haggard Drive and McCray Street a little before 1:00 p.m. when she was struck by the truck.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene to find Ms. Yribarren in the street, and immediately began CPR and emergency medical treatment. She was transported to Kern Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her fatal injuries at 1:30 p.m. At Matiasic & Johnson LLP our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Neva Yribarren and the Bakersfield community in their time of grief.
When a semi-truck is involved in a traffic accident, specifically between a smaller vehicle or a pedestrian, there is a higher result of serious injury or even death, because of the immense size of the truck. Due to the destructive potential of the truck, it is important that the men and women handling these massive trucks be properly trained in vehicle and roadway safety. Sadly, a common cause of trucking accidents is driver inexperience. At Matiasic & Johnson LLP we believe that drivers must be held accountable for their actions if the driver is found to be negligent, inattentive, or inexperienced.
Determining who to hold liable can require expert investigation and a thorough knowledge of California and Federal commercial trucking laws. Our proven and skilled attorneys have extensive experience in advocating for the compensation of innocent victims of trucking accidents.
