Big-Rig Truck Causes Multiple Vehicle Accident in Sutter County

A dramatic big-rig truck accident shut down a rural stretch of Highway 113 in Sutter County, California on July 6, 2012, at approximately 7:30 am. The accident involved two big-rig trucks, two pickup trucks, and one sedan. According to published reports, the accident was caused by a big-rig truck that failed to slow down in time to avoid striking a line of vehicles that were backed up in a construction zone. The big-rig truck rear-ended a Dodge pickup truck which was hauling a boat. This initiated a chain reaction of multiple collisions.

It is unclear why the driver of the big-rig truck failed to slow down to avoid impact with the other vehicle. It is possible that there was a mechanical defect Truck drivers and their employers are required by law to periodically inspect all commercial trucks in order to make certain that they are in good working order, and when they fail to do so small errors can lead to disastrous results. An employer can be held liable for a failure to ensure that its commercial trucks are safe and meet the required standards for the road.

A total of four people were injured as a result of this accident. Three of the victims were airlifted to a local hospital and the other injured victim was transported via ambulance. Sadly, big-rig truck accidents often result in fatal or severe injuries. Due to the enormous size and weight of big-rig trucks, it is usually the victims in passenger vehicles who suffer the brunt of the injuries.

In addition to the injuries, the accident caused the chemicals on the trucks to be released into the environment. The California Department of Fish and Game were among the emergency responders to the accident. They were trying to control the environmental impact of spilled diesel fuel that had leaked from one of the vehicles and entered a nearby waterway. Additionally, a truck that was involved in the accident was loaded with crop fertilizer which had spilled all over the roadway. Big-rig trucks are often loaded with hazardous materials which can cause additional injuries and damage during a trucking accident.
